Cadillac Lyriq: What Are The Charging Options?

The Cadillac Lyriq is a luxury electric crossover, and the first EV from the automaker. These are all the home and public charging options.

With the Lyriq, Cadillac has joined the league of automakers with EV models, but how does the automaker's first electric model fare in the charging department? The Lyriq may be the first EV to wear the Cadillac nameplate, but this all-electric crossover isn't the first to come from parent company General Motors. The Lyriq joins an electric GM family teeming with EVs like the GMC Hummer EV, the Chevrolet Silverado, Bolt, and more. Interestingly, pre-orders for the 2023 model have closed. Anyone who wants this EV has to pre-order the 2024 model.

As more automakers include EVs in their long-term plans, consumers are presented with multiple options to choose from. For instance, someone looking to buy a luxury electric SUV can choose from the stylish Mercedes-Benz EQS, Tesla Model X, Audi e-Tron, and now, the Cadillac Lyriq. However, switching from a gasoline vehicle to an EV may be difficult for a host of reasons. One of them is the fact that not many people have a comprehensive idea of how EVs work and the various benefits that can be gained from them. To improve consumers' reception of EVs, GM announced that it would use an online tool to answer EV questions.

As expected, the Lyriq can be charged at home and on the go, with DC fast charging available. At home, owners can use a dual-level charging cord which comes with both a 240V and 120V rating. Using it, owners can plug into either a four-prong or three-prong outlet. While the 120V cord can be used immediately, a professional electrician needs to install a 40A charge station so the 240V option can be activated. The charge station is sold separately. To lessen charging times, a standard Level 2 home charger is available, and upon installation by a professional, can deliver up to 52 miles of range per hour of charging on the RWD variant, and up to 37 miles per hour on the AWD trim.

For charging on the go, owners can opt for either Level 2 charging or DC fast charging. A public charger with a Level 2 output offers up to 37 miles of range per hour of charging, while the DC fast charger can provide up to 76 miles of range with a 10-minute charge. One thing to note is that factors like battery condition, charger output, and weather conditions can affect the Lyriq’s charge time. Following a partnership with Qmerit, owners of the Cadillac Lyriq can get an installation credit worth $1,500 when they enroll in the Customer Charger Offer. If granted, the credit will be used to facilitate the installation of a Level 2 home charger. Additionally, buyers can enjoy two years of complimentary DC fast charging at any EVgo station. To qualify, enrollment in the Customer Charger Offer is mandatory.

It's also worth noting that the Lyriq gets GM’s new battery technology designed to power the automaker's portfolio of new releases and forthcoming models. Called Ultium, the unique architecture enables GM to build batteries ranging from a capacity of 50.0 kWh to 200 kWh. For those interested in ordering the Lyriq, it's worth mentioning that the EV no longer qualifies for the Federal tax credit since GM has exceeded its quota. An upcoming Senate bill may overturn the situation, but for now, Cadillac buyers can only get state incentives and charging credits.
