The Chinese electric car manufacturer Xpeng has presented its new S4 fast charging column that offers a maximum charging power of 480 kW. The first S4 column has already been put into operation.
According to a practical test shown by the company, the Xpeng G9 was able to recharge a CLTC range of 210 kilometres in five minutes with this ultra-fast S4 charger. This is exactly the charging time that Xpeng had promised for its new e-SUV.
The maximum amperage is said to be 670 amps. To produce 480 kW at this amperage, the voltage would have to be 716 volts. As Xpeng founder and CEO He Xiaopeng stated at the presentation, the 480 kW is the maximum possible charging power. The G9 itself is supposed to be able to charge at up to 400 kW, which corresponds to a voltage of 597 volts at 670 A. This is plausible, since the G9 is based on an 800-volt architecture.

According to Xpeng, the first S charging column is already in operation is the company’s 1,000th charging station. Xpeng has set up its charging stations in 337 Chinese cities so far, with relatively low number of charging stations per city. These amount to 799 S2 fast chargers with up to 180 kW and 201 destination chargers.
Xpeng says it will initially focus on installing S4 columns in the ten cities with the largest number of G9 orders this year and will also install them in major cities and along major highways in 2023. By 2025, Xpeng plans to have 2,000 ultra-fast charging stations.
In July, Xpeng’s competitor Nio presented a fast charging station with up to 500 kW capacity. GAC Aion, the NEV offshoot of the Guangzhou-based GAC Group, has also already presented a 480 kW fast charging station where a GAC Aion V is supposed to be able to charge to 80 per cent in eight minutes.
